He was born on January 10, 1955 in Okrika, a metropolitan area of Rivers State, Nigeria. He attended Okrika Boys’ School but obtained the West Africa School Certificate at Government Comprehensive Secondary School in Borokiri, Port Harcourt.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=:: Professor Joseph Ajienka - CVC Nigeria :: )〕 He had his secondary education at River State where he obtainedin 1973.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Universities should embrace Approach to Research UNIPORT – Ajienka )〕 He obtained a bachelor's degree in Petroleum engineering from the University of Ibadan and master's degree and Doctorate (Ph. D) degree from the University of Port Harcourt in 1986 and 1990 respectively.
